Springtime Family Fun in Kansas City

April 11, 2018

Ah, spring is (finally!) in the air and while we’ll still get a few more storms or cold spells before later-spring warmth can be depended on, these fun, family outings and destinations will keep you from sinking into extended winter doldrums.

5 Things the Family Can Do to Take Advantage of Springtime in KC

Here are five of our staff favorites, many of which have become our own, “Rites of Spring.”.

Picnic in Powell Gardens

It’s hard not to feel like you’re in heaven when you take a picnic and head out to Powell Gardens. This botanical garden offers more than 900-acres of lush hillsides, meadows, ponds and riparian areas. Let the little ones delight in the magical, natural world around them – while you follow along and enjoy an amazing slice of serenity in the midst of a metropolis.

Brookside Art Annual

What’s better than a quaint neighborhood, the promotion of artists and their art, and plenty of free- children’s activities and outdoor music? Make sure you head to the Brookside Art Annual, which takes place the first weekend in May. No need to pack much as local food vendors will have booths there as well.

Deanna Rose Children’s Farmstead

You can’t argue with a $2 admission price, and a place that everyone in the family will enjoy. The Deanna Rose Children’s Farmstead, located right in Overland Park, is open 9-5 daily from April through October. The park features a turn-of-the-century main street, a historic schoolhouse, petting zoos, a fishing pond, horse-drawn wagon rides, tours, educational programs and more. You can even host your little one’s birthday party at the farm if it falls within their open season.

KC Fountain Day

This was long-considered a Kansas City Spring Ritual – the day the city’s public fountains are restored back to life after a long, cold winter. Even so, we’re surprised at the number of patients and families we know who haven’t ever attended.

This year’s Fountain Day is extra special because the Board of Parks & Recreation Commissioners and City of Fountains Foundation will be turning on the Spirit of Freedom Fountain, a city icon that was recently renovated using GOkc funds.

Did you miss it this year? No worries – just put it on your calendar to check with KC

Go Fly a Kite!

“Let’s go fly a kite, up to the highest height…and send it soaring…” Kite flying is a spring season thrill, and KCParent.com recently published a wonderful article, Let’s Go Fly a Kite: A Kansas City Celebration of a America’s Springtime Pastime,  which has interesting information about flying kites, as well as a list of KC-based organizations and locations that have kite specific events on their calendar this spring, including:

The article also lists the best parks to fly kites in and around the Kansas City area.
